My sculpture is similar to my painting in that the imagery of both is Pre-Colombian, Catholic & Personal filtered through my native Mexican experience, with emphasis on the angelic/demonic & my inner psychological & spiritual processes. I start a piece by constructing a wire armature. The head, hands, and other extremities, I sculpt using layers of three different clays. The body and other parts may then be built using cornhusks, pasta de caña (an ancient pre-Columbian method of using the pitch of corn stalks to create something like a paper maché), Western Bind Weed,or woven willow or grasses. Other natural materials are applied, such as, 22k gold leaf, precious & semi-precious stones. But, before adding the gold and stones, I paint the entire piece with a varnish/sealer that I make from an old recipe of Piñon Pine pitch and grain alcohol.
No one bequeathed my dreams to me, No one taught them to me. The muse of my inspiration comes every night and like Prometheus, each day I am disarmed arming my dreams.
